The Merrylock MK480 is a feature-packed 2, 3 and 4 thread overlocker designed to make overlocking easier, whether you're sewing garments, working with stretch fabrics, finishing raw edges or exploring decorative techniques.
Made in Taiwan, the MK480 combines excellent build quality with clever threading features, including an automatic lower looper threader, colour-coded threading guides, automatic tension release and dedicated LED illumination inside the looper area. These features help take much of the frustration out of threading and make the machine approachable for both new and experienced overlocker users.
A compact free arm, differential feed, adjustable stitch length, adjustable cutting width and presser foot pressure adjustment give you plenty of control across different fabrics and projects. You can also quickly switch to rolled hemming, disengage the cutting blade for selected techniques and configure the machine for 2, 3 or 4 thread stitching.

Trim, Stitch & Finish in One Step
Save time by trimming the fabric edge, stitching the seam and finishing the raw edge in one smooth operation. The MK480's cutting system trims away excess fabric as the needles and loopers form the overlock stitch, creating a neat, professionally finished edge as you sew.
It's ideal for garment construction, stretch fabrics and everyday sewing where you want clean, secure seams without having to finish the raw edges separately.
Automatic Lower Looper Threader
Threading the lower looper is traditionally one of the trickiest parts of setting up an overlocker. The MK480 features an automatic lower looper threading mechanism that helps guide the thread through the difficult rear section of the lower looper, simplifying the threading process.
Illuminated Looper Threading Area
One of the standout features of the MK480 is dedicated illumination inside the looper area. The additional lighting gives you a much clearer view of the threading path, loopers and guides when setting up or cleaning your machine.
Four LED lights illuminate both the sewing workspace and looper threading area, helping you see your fabric, stitching and threading more clearly.
Colour-Coded Threading Guides
Follow the clearly marked colour-coded threading paths for the needles and loopers. Each threading path is identified by its own colour, helping you quickly see where each thread needs to go when threading or rethreading the machine.
Automatic Tension Release
Raise the presser foot and the thread tensions automatically release, allowing thread to pass through the tension system more easily.
It's a simple feature that makes threading, rethreading and removing threads considerably easier.
Individual Thread Tension Controls
The MK480 features separate tension controls for each thread path, allowing you to fine-tune the needle and looper thread tensions to suit different stitches, fabrics and thread types.
Each tension dial corresponds with the machine's colour-coded threading system, making it easier to identify and adjust the correct thread when needed.
Small Free Arm
Remove the free-arm cover to reveal the MK480's slim free arm. Its compact design makes it easier to overlock smaller tubular areas such as sleeves, cuffs and hems that can be awkward to manoeuvre around a larger machine bed.
2-Needle Overlocking
The MK480 features two needle positions, allowing you to configure the machine for different 2, 3 and 4 thread overlocking stitches and techniques.
Use both needles for 4-thread overlocking, or remove the appropriate needle when setting up selected 2 or 3 thread stitches such as edge finishes, rolled hems and flatlocking.
2, 3 & 4 Thread Overlocking
Configure the MK480 for 2, 3 or 4 thread overlocking, giving you a versatile selection of stitches for garment construction, edge finishing and decorative sewing.
4-Thread Overlocking
Ideal for everyday garment construction, 4-thread overlocking uses two needle threads with the upper and lower loopers to create a strong, flexible seam while trimming and finishing the fabric edge at the same time.
3-Thread Overlocking
Ideal for neatly finishing raw fabric edges, 3-thread overlocking uses one needle thread with the upper and lower loopers to create a clean overlocked finish. It's also used for techniques such as rolled hemming and flatlocking.
2-Thread Overlocking
Ideal for selected edge finishes and speciality techniques, 2-thread overlocking uses one needle thread and one looper thread. The included 2-thread converter makes it easy to configure the MK480 for these stitches.
Adjustable Differential Feed
With a differential feed ratio from 0.6 to 2.0, you can adjust how the front and rear feed dogs move the fabric through the machine.
Differential feed can help reduce unwanted stretching on knit fabrics, minimise puckering on fine fabrics or intentionally create gathering and decorative effects.
Great for Stretch & Knit Fabrics
Overlocking is particularly useful for constructing garments from knit and stretch fabrics because the overlocked seam can move and stretch with the fabric.
Combine the MK480's 4-thread overlock stitch with its adjustable differential feed to create flexible seams while helping control unwanted stretching as you sew.
Versatile Across Different Fabrics
The MK480 can work across a broad variety of fabrics. In our demonstration, the machine is shown sewing lightweight crystal organza, standard woven fabric, stretchy T-shirt knit and thick towelling, demonstrating its versatility across very different fabric types.
Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure
Adjust the pressure applied by the presser foot to better suit different fabric types and weights. This gives you another level of control when moving between lightweight, standard and heavier fabrics.
Adjustable Stitch Length
Adjust the stitch length from 1mm to 5mm to suit different fabrics, stitches and sewing techniques.
A shorter stitch length is particularly useful for techniques such as narrow rolled hemming, while longer settings provide additional flexibility for everyday overlocking.
Adjustable Cutting Width
Adjust the cutting width to control how much fabric is trimmed as you sew and help achieve a properly formed overlock stitch across different fabrics.
The MK480 offers a stitch width of up to 7mm.
Built-In Narrow Rolled Hem
Create beautiful narrow rolled hems without changing the needle plate.
The MK480 features a built-in rolled hem mechanism that allows you to move between normal overlocking and rolled hemming using a simple fingertip control. Move the chaining finger to N for normal sewing or R when setting the machine for a narrow rolled hem.
Beautiful Decorative Rolled Hems
Rolled hemming creates a narrow, neatly wrapped edge that's particularly effective on lightweight fabrics and decorative edges.
The MK480's loopers can also accommodate suitable speciality threads such as woolly or bulk nylon. Using a bulk thread in the upper looper can create a fuller, smoother rolled hem with greater coverage around the fabric edge.
Decorative Thread Capability
You're not limited to standard overlocking thread. The MK480 can use selected decorative threads through the loopers to create different surface effects.
The machine has been demonstrated using embroidery thread, woolly nylon and thicker decorative thread for different overlocking techniques.
Top-Drive Cutting Blade System
The MK480 uses a top-drive cutting blade design, where the upper knife is driven from above.
This design helps reduce the chance of trimmed fabric waste becoming caught around the cutting mechanism while providing clean trimming as you overlock.
Disengageable Upper Knife
Not every overlocking technique requires the fabric to be trimmed. The upper knife can be disengaged and moved out of the sewing area when you want to stitch without cutting the fabric.
This is particularly useful for selected decorative techniques such as flatlocking.
Built-In Thread Cutter
Once you've finished sewing and chained off your overlocking, use the convenient built-in thread cutter to quickly trim the thread chain without reaching for scissors.
Included Needle Threading Tool
The included needle threading tool helps guide the thread through the needle eye, making threading the overlock needles easier.
Snap-On Presser Foot
The snap-on presser foot system allows the standard foot to be quickly removed and replaced with compatible optional presser feet, making it easier to expand the machine for specialised overlocking techniques.
Built-In Accessory Storage
Open the looper cover and you'll find a neatly organised storage area for frequently used accessories.
Keeping essential tools inside the machine means they're conveniently available whenever you need to thread, adjust or clean your overlocker.
Fabric Waste Catcher
The included fabric waste catcher clips neatly onto the front of the machine to collect fabric trimmings produced by the cutting blade, helping keep loose scraps contained and your sewing area tidier.
Looper Cover Safety Shut-Off
The MK480 includes an automatic safety shut-off system. If the looper cover is left open, the machine will not operate, providing an additional safeguard when threading, cleaning or accessing the looper area.
Easy-Access Controls
Frequently used controls including stitch length and differential feed are conveniently positioned on the outside of the machine for quick adjustment while you sew.

The videos provided here are a great resource for any issues. Can use regular sewing thread to begin with. So happy with my purchase! Wonderful!
