The Janome SewSwitch 40 brings computerised sewing and 2-thread overlocking together in one innovative rotating machine.
Release the turntable lever and rotate the machine to move between two dedicated work areas, so you can sew your project and finish raw edges without finding space for two separate machines.
On the sewing side, the SewSwitch 40 features 40 built-in stitches, four sensor buttonholes, an automatic thread cutter, Superior Needle Threader 2, adjustable presser foot pressure and a 7-piece horizontal feeding system.
Rotate to the dedicated 2-thread overlocker for adjustable stitch length and cutting width, an easy-threading lower looper and disengageable upper knife. Both functions operate at speeds of up to 820 stitches per minute.
One machine, two ways to sew
Switch Between Sewing & Overlocking
To change between computerised sewing and overlocking, switch off and unplug the machine, release the turntable lever and rotate the machine to bring the required sewing side forward. Select the corresponding sewing function before starting. Two dedicated work areas are available within one integrated machine.
Turntable Release Lever
The built-in release lever allows you to unlock the machine's rotating mechanism when switching between sewing and overlocking. Simply release the lever, rotate the machine to the required sewing position and lock it securely into place before use.

Superior Needle Threader 2
Janome’s Superior Needle Threader 2 simplifies threading the sewing needle. After positioning the upper thread, operate the lever to guide the thread through the needle eye. The improved mechanism is designed to minimise thread loops during threading.

Choose from 40 built-in stitches for everyday sewing, garment construction, stretch fabrics and decorative techniques. The expanded stitch selection provides more options for finishing and personalising your projects.
4 One-Step Sensor Buttonholes
Choose from four sensor buttonhole styles. Place your button into the sliding gauge on the buttonhole foot, and the machine uses its size to create a matching buttonhole for shirts, dresses and other garments.
2-Digit LED Screen
The easy-to-read 2-digit LED screen provides a clear display while you select and adjust your sewing functions.
Computerised Function Controls

Speed Control Slider
Adjust the machine's maximum sewing speed using the speed control slider. Slow the machine down for detailed work or increase the speed when sewing longer, straightforward seams.
Easy Reverse Button
Reinforce the beginning and end of seams using the conveniently positioned reverse button for simple, controlled reverse stitching.
Memorised Needle Up/Down
Select the needle stopping position to suit your sewing. The sewing side defaults to needle-down, useful for pivoting at corners and keeping fabric in position when you pause.
158.5mm Sewing Workspace
With 158.5mm of workspace to the right of the needle, the SewSwitch 40 provides practical room for everyday sewing, garment construction and general creative projects.
Automatic Thread Cutter
Press the automatic thread cutter button to cut the upper and bobbin threads together at the end of sewing. On selected stitch patterns, automatic cutting can also be enabled for a convenient finish without reaching for scissors.
Top-Loading Bobbin
The top-loading full rotary hook bobbin provides convenient access when inserting or changing the bobbin, helping make everyday machine setup straightforward.
Manual Thread Tension Control
Adjust the sewing thread tension manually to suit your fabric, thread and sewing requirements.
7-Piece Feed Dog with Horizontal Feeding
The 7-piece feed dog uses a horizontal box-feed mechanism to maintain contact with the fabric for longer during feeding. This helps reduce fabric shifting and puckering and supports smooth, consistent stitching.
Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure
Use the six-level presser foot pressure dial to suit different fabric types and thicknesses. Lighter pressure can help when sewing delicate materials, while firmer pressure can improve fabric control on heavier projects.
Accessory Storage
The half-type extension table provides a practical sewing surface while doubling as convenient accessory storage. Open the front cover to keep frequently used sewing accessories organised and within easy reach.
Free-Arm Sewing
Detach the extension table to access the free arm, making it easier to sew tubular and hard-to-reach areas such as sleeves, cuffs, bags and trouser legs.
Up to 820 Stitches Per Minute
Sew at speeds of up to 820 stitches per minute for efficient everyday sewing. The built-in speed control slider lets you reduce the maximum sewing speed whenever you want greater control for detailed or more precise work.
Overlocking Features
2-Thread Overlocking
Finish raw fabric edges with a dedicated one-needle, two-thread overlock stitch. The overlocker trims the fabric edge as it stitches, and the needle can be installed in the left or right position to achieve different widths.
Automatic Needle-Up Stop
When overlocking, the needle automatically stops in the raised position when you stop sewing. This makes it easier to insert, reposition and remove your fabric for a smoother start and finish.
Adjustable Stitch Length
Adjust the overlock stitch length from approximately 1mm to 5mm using the dedicated stitch length dial, allowing you to adapt your stitching to different fabrics and finishing requirements.
Adjustable Cutting Width
Adjust the lower knife position to optimise the cutting width for different fabrics and seam finishes. Cutting width ranges from approximately 3mm to 5mm with the right needle position and 5mm to 7mm with the left needle position.
Disengageable Upper Knife
When you want to overlock without trimming the fabric, simply use the upper knife release control to deactivate the upper knife. This gives you greater flexibility for different sewing and finishing techniques.
Easy-Thread Lower Looper
The SewSwitch 40 uses a dedicated lower looper threading mechanism designed to make one of the trickier parts of overlocker threading easier and more efficient.

Intuitive thread guides help guide you through threading the overlock needle and lower looper, making the threading path easier to follow and learn.
Overlock Foot Designed for Smooth, Stable Sewing
The specially designed overlock foot helps provide smooth and stable fabric feeding across a variety of sewing situations. A gentle curve at the front helps the foot move over changes in fabric thickness, while grooves underneath help reduce fabric slippage.
A built-in stopper helps minimise presser foot tilting when sewing thicker areas, while the extended needle-drop position guide improves visibility. The wider foot tip also helps guide stitches for neat, stable rolled hems.
Overlocker Presser Foot Safety Sensor
The overlocking side also checks that the presser foot is lowered before sewing. If you try to start with the foot raised, an audible warning sounds and the machine will not operate.
Reduced Vibration & Noise
Specially designed rubber feet help minimise vibration and noise while improving machine stability, contributing to a smoother and quieter sewing experience.
Built-In Safety System
When you select sewing or overlocking, the machine deactivates the side that isn't being used. This integrated system helps ensure only the selected sewing function is active while you work.
