Mini Duffle Bag
Date Posted:21 October 2021
Create your own mini duffle bag or gift it to someone else! This duffle bag is the perfect travel sized option for those wanting to pack light, or even carry your belongings to a picnic or fun day out. You can also modify the pattern sizes if you want to make the bag bigger or smaller.
The best fabrics for this bag are a sturdier fabric like canvas or cotton duck, however you can also use broadcloth or calico. We are using cotton duck and broadcloth in this tutorial. You’ll need 1 metre of each fabric to properly create this bag to the measurements provided.

Machines Used
- Brother NV50S Sewing Machine
What you'll need:
- Sewing machine
- Rasant thread (in your colour choice)
- 1m of main fabric (in your colour choice)
- 1m of lining fabric (in your colour choice)
- A zip (14") - try not to use a dress zip or invisible zip
- Sewing scissors (or a rotary cutter + mat)
- Iron
- Echidna clips or pins
- Measuring tape
Cutting measurements:
Main fabric:
- 2 x 7.5" by 7.5" (20cm x 20cm) side pieces
- 2 x 7.5" by 5" (20cm x 15cm) side pocket pieces
- 2 x 15" by 15" (40cm x 40cm) side front pieces
- 2 x 2" by 1.5" (5cm x 3.8cm) zip tabs
Lining fabric:
- 2 x 7.5" by 7.5" (20cm x 20cm) side pieces
- 2 x 7.5" by 5" (20cm x 15cm) side pocket pieces
- 2 x 15" by 15" (40cm x 40cm) side front pieces
- 2 x 30" by 3" (76cm x 7.5cm) straps
Tip:
When enclosing the raw edges, use an overlocker. If you don't have an overlocker, use a built-in zig zag stitch to finish off the edges to stop the fabric from fraying.
If you wish to make your duffle bag larger, simply make the biggest number measurement of your fabric (in this case it’s 15"/40cm) as big as you want, then halve that number for the remaining pieces.
For example, if you wanted to make a 60cm bag, your side pieces would be 30cm x 30cm and so on and so forth. Your straps should remain the same size, if anything you can make them a little longer. Your zip tabs should also stay the same size regardless of bag size (your zip size will change with your bag).

Interfacing?
By: K on 11 October 2022If using cotton fabric with fusible interfacing, do i need to make any adjustments in measurements?
Echidna Sewing Response
Hi! There is no need to change the sizing if using fusible interfacing. You would only need to alter the measurements if you are making the bag bigger or smaller. Happy stitching!
